Deidre Cronje, 40 years old,  living in Kroonstad, Free State shares her story as a living donor.

1. Which organ did you donate, and in what year?
I donated a part of my liver in April 2019

2. How long were your recipient on the waiting list for an organ?
4 months

3. What made you decide to donate?
When we heard that Chi-Nelri then only 3 years old, needed a liver transplant there were so many friends and family members willing to get tested including me and my husband. Family is very important to me so there was no question about it I made myself available to get tested and thankfully was a match.

4. Describe the emotions experienced when you were told that you are a suitable donor?
I was in tears, thanking God that the wait was over, and a match found. A rollercoaster of emotions.

5. What is life like now, after donating an organ?
I am living a normal life.

6. What advice would you give people considering being a living donor?
If you are considering make sure your partner and kids are involved in your decision, it is a lot of tests and an emotional ride. You need support from family and friends and recovery time for you is there for a reason, use it.

7. Why do you think there is a shortage of donors in South Africa?
There is not enough awareness around organ donating, living donors are unaware of the process and al the test that needs to be done.

8. Has the idea of an altruistic donor become an outdated expectation in a modern society?
Yes, people will rather donate organs to family or friends, rather to go through the operation to donate to someone they don’t know.

9. What is the biggest stigma / myth you have heard about organ donation?
I’m not in the best of health to be a donor.

10. If you could describe donation in one word, what would it be?
Selfless

11. Summarise the benefits of organ donation in one word.
Life

12. Are there any reason NOT to be an organ donor?
If you are healthy and able to save a life, I see no reason why you can’t be a living donor or even sign up to have your organs donated after death.

13. If you could be any organ, what organ would you be and why?
The heart it is one of our main organs and keeps the body going.
