Given two years to live as a boy, James Stevenson

Given two years to live as a boy, James Stevenson is now 81. In 1974, his twin brother Archie gave him a kidney, and James still celebrates every August as his kidneyversary. His one word for transplant: reborn.

1. Which organ did you receive, and in what year?
Kidney, 14 August 1974, at Johannesburg General Hospital.

2. How long were you on the waiting list for your organ?
Didn't wait, as I was dying and almost left it too late; my twin brother gave me a kidney.

3. What was life like before the transplant? How did you spend your days?
I was sick and could do very little for myself. Very high blood pressure.

4. Describe the emotions experienced when you were told your donor is a match?
Very relieved and I was lucky to be a twin.

5. What is life like now, after the transplant?
I got my life back.

6. What advice would you give patients on the waiting list?
Life for patients on the waiting list can be very difficult, but to try and stay positive and not to give up hope.

7. What do you think will improve donation rates?
Making it mandatory that you must opt out of being a donor would help. Also, making people aware that you can live a normal, long life with only one kidney.

8. If you could describe transplant in one word, what would it be?
Reborn.

After surviving a cardiac arrest during an Ironman

After surviving a cardiac arrest during an Ironman, Elzanne gave a kidney to Amoret, who had been on dialysis for almost nine years. Her one word for donation: holy. Her advice: do not hesitate.

1. Which organ did you donate, and in what year?
Kidney, 23 September 2025.

2. How long was your recipient on the waiting list for an organ?
She was on dialysis for almost nine years.

3. What made you decide to donate?
It was a personal journey and conviction between me and God since 2023, when I myself suffered a cardiac arrest while participating in an Ironman in Port Elizabeth.

4. Describe the emotions experienced when you were told that you are a suitable donor?
This was truly one of the happiest days of my life and such a privilege to be part of this amazing testimony.

5. What is life like now, after donating an organ?
Honestly, health-wise, I feel exactly the same and in some ways, even better. Training is as usual, and running sometimes even feels faster.

6. What advice would you give people considering being a living donor?
Do not hesitate; this is one of the most humbling, holy, precious things to be a part of.

7. Why do you think there is a shortage of donors in South Africa?
Once you become a donor you tend to hear more stories of people with kidney failure, some 37 and even only 5 years old. We were born with two kidneys, one to donate to those in need. We just have to create more awareness among people everywhere.

8. What is the biggest stigma or myth you have heard about organ donation?
“I will only donate to my family… Why did you donate to someone that is not family?”

9. If you could describe donation in one word, what would it be?
Holy. It was life-changing, not only for her but it changed my heart and headspace completely, and I will forever be grateful to Amoret who included me in this very special journey.

10. Summarise the benefits of organ donation in one word.
Life-changing.

11. If you could be any organ, what organ would you be and why?
Before donating, I would have said heart, as without it you can't live, but without a kidney you also can't live. Kidney chose me, so that is what it will be.

Felt a tiny sneeze or a slight ache and instantly

Felt a tiny sneeze or a slight ache and instantly wondered if something is wrong? You are not alone! Hyper-awareness is a super common part of life after a transplant. The trick is finding a balance between staying health-conscious and enjoying your second chance. Focus on what you can control, like staying hydrated and taking your meds, and let your clinic team handle the big stuff.

You’ve got this, one happy, healthy day at a time! 🌿💚

What a day! On Saturday 10 October, healthcare pro

What a day! On Saturday 10 October, healthcare professionals and medical students joined us at the University of Pretoria’s Prinshof Campus for “Strengthening the deceased donor pathway: from identification to transplant outcomes”.

From recognising a potential donor and supporting families to brain death testing, retrieval and life after transplant, the day followed every step of the donor pathway. The medical students then put theory into practice with a hands-on kidney transplant practical.

Thank you to our speakers, our transplant recipients who shared their stories, the TUKS Student Surgical Society, the Faculty of Health Sciences, and our sponsors for making this day possible.

Every donation starts with a conversation. Have you told your family what you want?

Happy World Mental Health Day. When we talk about

Happy World Mental Health Day.
When we talk about organ and tissue donation, we often focus on the physical miracle of saving lives. But today, we are shining a gentle light on the mind. The journey through chronic illness, waiting lists, transplants, or grieving a loved one comes with deep emotional waves.
Whether you are navigating post-transplant recovery, waiting for your call, supporting a patient as a caregiver, or honouring a donor hero, please remember: caring for your mental wellbeing is just as vital as caring for your physical health.
Today, take a quiet moment for yourself. Chat to a friend, step out into the spring sunshine, or simply rest without any guilt. You do not have to carry it all on your own, and asking for help is a sign of true strength.
How are you taking care of your mind today? Let us know in the comments below!
