We are excited to introduce our new Project Manager, Stella de Kock, from Faerie Glen in Pretoria. We are super happy that our team is growing!

Stella is also currently on the waiting list for an organ, so has first-hand experience about how dire the organ donor situation in SA is, and she is passionate about making a difference. We did a little interview with her:

1. Which organ/tissue are you waiting for?
I have a hereditary autoimmune disease that only affects my kidneys and has resulted in End Stage Renal failure. I have been on the list waiting for a kidney since 2012.

2. What is life like waiting for transplant? How do you spend your days?
I’m on dialysis 3 times a week for four hours at a time. I’m also unable to work full time due to lack of energy and spending time on dialysis. It’s difficult to travel to remote places, and I have to plan for dialysis. Fluid restriction is the most difficult part of dealing with this illness.

3. What advice would you give patients on the waiting list?
Keep healthy, listen to your Doctors and keep positive. Also, join the TELL support group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/livinglegaciessupportgroup/

4. Why do you think there is a shortage of donors in South Africa?
Lack of education, awareness and misconceptions about what it means to be a donor.

WELCOME Stella, we’re so chuffed to have you on board!
