Michael Roberts, 59, from the Western Cape, was inspired by his Christian faith to donate a kidney to his wife’s school friend.

1. Which organ did you donate, and in what year?
I donated a kidney in 2023.

2. How long was your recipient on the waiting list for an organ?
Five years.

3. What made you decide to donate?
My relationship with Jesus . He says “Love your Neighbour.” and the story in Luke 10:25-37 of the good Samaritan . Once it occurred to me that Rosan actually could use a kidney it was just a question of understanding the logistics since I’m not from here.  The analogy of hitchhiking works here also ….sometimes you need a lift other times you can give someone a lift!

4. Describe the emotions experienced when you were told that you are a suitable donor?
Relief ; because then we could organise the next things; it also bolstered Rosan’s hope; I think.

5. What is life like now, after donating an organ?
Besides having a great new friend; the same.

6. What advice would you give people considering being a living donor?
To be fully committed and certain before telling someone you will donate; then just have some books and errands to do while getting your tests done; treat it like a rally.  When in doubt….yes they will need another urine sample.

7. Why do you think there is a shortage of donors in South Africa?
People are possibly reluctant because of the non-linear nature of the process; it can and needs to be streamlined.
Give the donor the complete list of tests and samples needed in one packet with a timeline and medical aide case number assigned to that pair on each form. In App form would save redundant paperwork and integrate the process.

8. Has the idea of an altruistic donor become an outdated expectation in a modern society?
Possibly yes; sadly.  Maybe a network of volunteer houses to accommodate donors (accommodation is expensive where surgeries are done)  and a fast-tracked process ? Maybe legislation to give tax breaks to companies and or donors for paid time off for employees donating an organ?

9. If you could describe donation in one word, what would it be?
Empathy.

10. Are there any reason NOT to be an organ donor?
For a living donor; only if you are incompatible or unable to because of time or monetary constraints.

11. If you could be any organ, what organ would you be and why?
The brain….control.
