On #TransplantTuesday we feature the story of Alreze Gordon age 27, from Gauteng.

1. Which organ/tissue did you receive, and in what year?

I received a liver transplant in 2017.

2. What was life like before the transplant? How did you spend your days?

At first I lived life like anyone apart from quite a few hospital visits but in August 2016 it all took a massive turn. I had varicose veins burst in my throat and lost 2 odd litres of blood. From then I was ill and getting weaker. I was on the waiting list for a liver for about a year .

3. Describe the emotions experienced when you received “The Call” for your transplant?

I was happy and anxious but also in disbelief at the same time. I remember getting dressed into the hospital gown and asking my Mom “what if I don’t wake up”. So there were many mixed emotions throughout the process.

4. What is life like now, after the transplant?

After a mishap (10cm blood clot) I’m the healthiest I’ve ever been. Taking care of my health mentally and physically. More active and I am now more willing to experience things.

5. What advice would you give patients on the waiting list?

Don’t lose hope. Follow the doctors’ orders and keep faith.

6. Why do you think there is a shortage of donors in South Africa?

There is definitely not enough awareness for organ donation. Many people are all for it but don’t know how or what to do to register, and somehow some are even afraid of their organs being trafficked.

7. If you could describe transplant in one word, what would it be?

Life-changing, renewal, second chance.
