Who’s joining us for CF Genes Day on 22 May 2026?

A day to wear your denim with purpose and make a real difference, one pair of jeans at a time. Led by the South African Cystic Fibrosis Association, this meaningful initiative raises awareness and funds for people living with cystic fibrosis (CF) across South Africa. Donations help provide essential medical equipment and improve access to life-saving treatments.

So, what is cystic fibrosis? CF is a genetic condition that affects the lungs and digestive system, causing thick, sticky mucus to build up in the body. This can lead to breathing difficulties, frequent lung infections, and challenges with digestion. In some cases, lung damage can become severe enough to require a transplant.

Wear your jeans, show your support, and be part of a day that brings awareness, hope, and help to those living with CF.

Receiving a life-saving organ transplant is truly life changing!
It opens doors to moments, milestones, and journeys that once may have seemed impossible.
To celebrate these incredible second chances, we invite organ recipients to share
“Places I Have Been Since My Transplant.”
Tell us about a place you have visited since your transplant and why it is meaningful to you. Perhaps it was a long-awaited holiday, a return to a favourite spot, a special family gathering, or simply somewhere that reminded you how precious life is. Most importantly, share why this experience may not have been possible without the gift of transplantation. Your story can inspire others, honour donors and their families, and show the world just how life-changing the gift of life truly is.

At 31, Mario Nobrega from Cape Town shares his story:
1. Which organ did you receive, and in what year?
A heart transplant in 2025.
2. How long were you on the waiting list for your organ?
1.5 years
3. What was life like before the transplant?
Life was good until I got sick. Toward the end, my days became very limited. I would wake up, do a bit of work, rest, then try finish the day. I was still able to work, but life became smaller and focused on getting through each day.
4. Describe the emotions experienced when you received “The Call”?
Getting the call was overwhelming in the best and scariest way. I felt like I was not really living anymore, just surviving, so there was excitement because this was my chance to start living again. At the same time, there were nerves and fear. It was a mix of everything, but excitement was strongest.
5. What is life like now, after the transplant?
Life is still an adjustment, but it felt better almost immediately. Early on, I knew things had changed for the better. Everything has gone smoothly, and I feel very privileged. The transplant has given me the energy to rebuild my life. I am still doing follow-ups and cannot travel yet, so this year has been about getting back into life. Even small things feel exciting now. Taking my dog for a longer walk is a big win.
6. What advice would you give patients on the waiting list?
Focus on what you can do. If all you can manage is a short walk, do that. Stay as healthy as possible within your limits. Find something that keeps your mind busy and gives you purpose. Do not compare yourself to healthy people. Once I accepted my limits, it became easier to cope. Even doing one thing a day counts.
7. Why do you think there is a shortage of donors in South Africa?
There is still a lack of understanding around organ donation. When families must decide, it is harder if they are not informed. Education is key. If more people understood donation beforehand, families would feel more confident. South Africa should move towards an opt-out system, like Spain, with proper education. That would make a difference.
8. If you could describe transplant in one word, what would it be?
Life-changing.
