At 31, Mario Nobrega from Cape Town shares his story:
1. Which organ did you receive, and in what year?
A heart transplant in 2025.
2. How long were you on the waiting list for your organ?
1.5 years
3. What was life like before the transplant?
Life was good until I got sick. Toward the end, my days became very limited. I would wake up, do a bit of work, rest, then try finish the day. I was still able to work, but life became smaller and focused on getting through each day.
4. Describe the emotions experienced when you received “The Call”?
Getting the call was overwhelming in the best and scariest way. I felt like I was not really living anymore, just surviving, so there was excitement because this was my chance to start living again. At the same time, there were nerves and fear. It was a mix of everything, but excitement was strongest.
5. What is life like now, after the transplant?
Life is still an adjustment, but it felt better almost immediately. Early on, I knew things had changed for the better. Everything has gone smoothly, and I feel very privileged. The transplant has given me the energy to rebuild my life. I am still doing follow-ups and cannot travel yet, so this year has been about getting back into life. Even small things feel exciting now. Taking my dog for a longer walk is a big win.
6. What advice would you give patients on the waiting list?
Focus on what you can do. If all you can manage is a short walk, do that. Stay as healthy as possible within your limits. Find something that keeps your mind busy and gives you purpose. Do not compare yourself to healthy people. Once I accepted my limits, it became easier to cope. Even doing one thing a day counts.
7. Why do you think there is a shortage of donors in South Africa?
There is still a lack of understanding around organ donation. When families must decide, it is harder if they are not informed. Education is key. If more people understood donation beforehand, families would feel more confident. South Africa should move towards an opt-out system, like Spain, with proper education. That would make a difference.
8. If you could describe transplant in one word, what would it be?
Life-changing.

Coreen’s story is not only about survival; it is about restoration. It is also a reminder of the extraordinary impact of living donors. Her donor’s decision did more than save a life; it made a full, active future possible.

Encouraging conversations about organ donation, supporting patient education, and normalising these discussions within communities are essential steps toward improving transplant outcomes. Because ultimately, one conversation and one decision can change everything.

In short: listen to the evidence, appreciate the scientists, and remember that sometimes the smartest thing you can do for your health… is believe the people in lab coats.

This Easter, we’re not just hunting for chocolate eggs… we’re celebrating something far sweeter, borrowed breath and second chances. 🐣🤍
Transplant life can sometimes feel like the ultimate Easter egg hunt. You’re constantly searching, for balance, for good blood results, for stable check-ups, for energy, for “normal.” Donors give recipients the most extraordinary gift, a chance to live, to love, to celebrate another Easter. Because of that selfless decision, recipients get to hunt for eggs, laugh at bad dad jokes, eat too much chocolate, and plan for a future that once felt uncertain.
Transplant life isn’t always pastel colours and pretty baskets. It’s medication alarms, hospital visits, masks when others don’t need them, and learning to live carefully but courageously. It’s resilience. It’s gratitude. It’s faith.
