Press Release: Health Education Programme for Kids.

TELL Launches Orgamites in Gauteng this Orgust to Inspire a New Generation of Organ Donation Champions

August is Organ Donor Awareness Month in South Africa, also known as Orgust, and TELL (Transplant Education for Living Legacies) is marking the occasion with a powerful initiative aimed at inspiring and educating the next generation: the official Gauteng launch of the Orgamites Mighty Education Programme, an international, child-focused health and organ donation education toolkit.

This initiative couldn’t come at a more critical time. With over 8,000 South Africans; including at least 40 children—currently waiting for life-saving organ transplants, the Orgamites programme brings hope through education. One of the greatest barriers to
organ donation in South Africa is the lack of awareness and conversation within families. The Orgamites aim to change that—starting with children.

Empowering Teachers, Engaging Families: Upcoming Webinar
TELL will host a free online webinar for teachers, life skills coordinators, and healthcare professionals on Tuesday, 12 August at 19:00, focused on how to present the Orgamites toolkit effectively in classrooms and community settings.

This webinar is designed for:

  • Foundation and intermediate phase educators
  • Life skills and LO coordinators
  • Educational practitioners
  • Healthcare professionals who want to educate young patients on organ health and body awareness.

What Is the Orgamites Programme?
The Orgamites Mighty Education Programme is a global health education initiative that uses fun characters, representing major organs, to help children aged 5–11 understand the importance of looking after their bodies and helping others.

Key elements include:

  • Mighty Me Toolkit: Learn about body organs and their functions
  • Mighty Habits Toolkit: Explore healthy habits and choices
  • Mighty Kind Toolkit: Inspire kindness and discussions about donation.

Families Can Join the Fun Too!
The Orgamites aren’t just for the classroom. Families are encouraged to join in by exploring the toolkit’s fun and educational resources at home, including:

  • Short videos introducing each Orgamite and their function
  • Colouring pages and activity sheets
  • Interactive tools to encourage open discussions around health and donation

These family-friendly resources help bring the conversation into the home—where the most important decisions about donation are made.

Key Achievements and Global Reach
Originally launched in Canada in 2021, the programme has since expanded to thousands of schools in 8 countries, including South Africa, Greece, the UK, and Canada—with expansion to the USA, New Zealand, and Australia planned by 2026.

The Orgamites were gifted to South Africa by the Canadian Blood Services and are proudly implemented in partnership with TELL and the Southern African Transplant Society (SATS).

Why Start with Kids?
The earlier we teach children about their health, their organs, and how to help others, the better. In South Africa, no organ donation happens without family consent—making early family discussions essential.

By reaching children in the classroom, the Orgamites empower families to have informed, life-saving conversations at home. As TELL’s name reflects, it’s all about Transplant Education for Living Legacies—and it starts with telling your family your wishes.

Join the Movement this Orgust
Orgust is more than a month—it’s a movement. Through classroom activations, family resources, and public awareness, TELL is working to grow a culture of health, compassion, and informed choice.

We invite schools, clinics, and communities across Gauteng and beyond to get involved, host Orgamites sessions, and attend the webinar to see how this programme can transform young lives—and save others.
