Meet Mark Nortjie, 43 from Eastwood, Pietermaritzburg. After his kidney transplant he was able to enjoy athletics and break a South African long jump record.
1. Which organ did you receive, and in what year?
A kidney transplant in 2013
2. How long were you on the waiting list for your organ?
One year and six months
3. What was life like before the transplant? How did you spend your days?
Before the transplant life was a struggle as I was on dialysis every 4 hours limiting me from doing the things I loved to do.
4. Describe the emotions experienced when you were told your donor is a match?
The day I found out my donor was a match, emotions ran high as I was unable to contain myself with delight. It was a joyous day for the whole family who was supportive on this whole journey with me up till today..
5. What is life like now, after the transplant?
My life has changed for the better with my new kidney as I have now gone back to play the sport that I love so much and joined the South African Transplant Sports Association where I achieved my South African colours in athletics.
6. What advice would you give patients on the waiting list?
People on the waiting list should not give up hope. Be patient and stay positive.
7. Why do you think there is a shortage of donors in South Africa?
There is a lack of knowledge about transplantation in South Africa especially in areas that are disadvantaged.
8. If you could describe transplant in one word, what would it be?
A breath of fresh air.
